The UFC has put together a pretty good fight card considering they took about 90 days to plan it. The undercard looks like a weekly KOTC show, but other than that it’s all good. By no means is it anywhere as interesting as the Affliction card, but considering it’s about $45 cheaper, fans will flock. I can’t blame them either.

This time I have a new victim. While the FightStalker himself is getting preparing for the bar, I’ve got an opportunity to take out another over-hyped and over-educated pick opponent in my very own brother. Bring it!

-Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly

Anderson Silva (21-4) vs. James Irvin (14-4) (4-3)
Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly: Silva by TKO in 1. Make no mistake about it, this fight is all about Silva. Whether he wants to challenge at 205lbs or not, he’s fighting at light heavyweight to keep from having to cut too much weight on short notice. James Irvin is just the right style, in the wrong place. This should be exciting, albeit short.
Chris Beverly, PsyD: Silva by TKO in 1. James Irvin is an outstanding striker coming off an impressive 8 second KO of Houston Alexander. Anderson Silva is arguably the best striker in the history of the UFC, who is coming off an unbeaten streak in the Octagon. Too bad for Irvin.

#3 Brandon Vera (8-2) (4-2) vs. Reese Andy (7-2) (0-0) — (5-1 in IFL)
Conqueror: Vera by TKO in 2. Brandon Vera is angry; Reese Andy has two first names. One is not quite as imposing as the other. All joking aside, Reese Andy is a formidable opponent. The veteran of the IFL has been impressive over his short career, but he hasn’t beaten the best of the best and remains a bit of a question mark. The same could be said for Vera, no one really knows how good he really is. Previous to his victory over Frank Mir, he had beaten virtually no one worth mentioning. While few doubt he’s a top contender, he has something to prove and should do so against Andy.
PsyD: Vera by TKO in 3. While Andy has an outside chance at winning this fight, Vera’s multi-faceted attack will prove too overwhelming for Andy. Expect Vera to wear Andy down with punches and sporadic takedowns, before finishing him off sometime during round 3.

Hermes Franca (18-6) (5-3) vs. #5 Frank Edgar (8-1) (3-1)
Conqueror: Edgar by unanimous. The return of Hermes Franca should bring a renewed focus to the Brazilian. Since leaving the UFC, the former contender has taken time and started his own fight team. Hopefully he learned how to sprawl. His opponent Frank Edgar has one of the best takedowns in all of MMA and will look to capitalize against Franca. I don’t know who’s favored, but this should be a takedown-fest with Edgar on top.
PsyD: Close fight, but Franca by split decision. Edgar is the superior grappler, while Franca has better striking skills. Franca will get in some aggressive, high impact strikes and novel but unsuccessful submission attempts, tipping the points in his favor JUST enough to be awarded the split decision.

#9 Cain Velasquez (3-0) (1-0) vs. Jake O’Brien (10-1) (3-1)
Conqueror: Velasquez by TKO in 2. Jake O’Brien is a great wrestler; Cain Velasquez is a spectacular wrestler. The obvious of the two should win. O’Brien’s problem is simple, he’s got nothing else. Velasquez is a monster with good hands and a ferocious ground-and-pound that overpowers and overwhelms his opponents. This should be a dominant performance by the former Arizona State standout, and put Velasquez on the map with mainstream MMA fans.
PsyD: Toss up, but Velasquez by unanimous decision. This is a match of contrasting grappling styles rather than a fight featuring one fighter with superior ground skills; interesting fight, Velasquez’s amazing takedown skill gives him a considerable advantage. And although Velasquez will struggle to finish O’Brien, he’ll make his night a memorable one - and not in a good way.

Anthony Johnson (5-1) (2-1) vs. Kevin Burns (6-1) (1-0)
Conqueror: Johnson by TKO in 1. Kevin Burns’ triangle choke on Brazilian Jujitsu black belt Roan Carneiro was a thing of beauty. Hence, his opponent hopes to take his submission skills out of the equation. Anthony Johnson is one-dimensional and that dimension is entertaining as hell. This is a tough fight for both opponents, but “Rumble” should leave victorious.
PsyD: Johnson by TKO in 2. Johnson has momentum. ‘Nuff said.

Jesse Taylor (6-2) (0-0) vs. CB Dollaway (6-1) (0-1)
Conqueror: Dollaway by unanimous. Who really was the Ultimate Fighter…runner up? Jesse “The Ass” Taylor makes his UFC debut after undergoing AA and looks to take out his replacement. That probably won’t happen. CB Dollaway should have won the Ultimate Fighter, he was just too stupid … twice. His inability to keep his damn arm out away from a submission shouldn’t be a factor against Taylor and overwhelming will be the theme.
PsyD: Dollaway by unanimous decision. Jesse Taylor isn’t ready for the Octagon, which always comes with physical as well as emotional pressures. And although Taylor has the ability to defeat Dollaway, his mindset and questionable motivation is likely to prevent him from pulling off a victory in this match.

Tim Credeur (9-2) (0-0) vs. Cale Yarbrough (0-0) (0-0)
Conqueror: Credeur by unanimous. The fight that was supposed to happen, will. Neither of these two fighters impressed me with their cage prowess, but they do a good job of “bringing it” to every fight. Based on Yarbrough’s inexperience, anything can happen, but probably won’t. Cale’s lack of ground game should be his downfall. While this should be an entertaining fight, I wouldn’t look for a finish from either fighter.
PsyD: Credeur by unanimous decision. Anything could happen here. Yarbrough’s inexperience severely lessens his chances of winning this match, and Credeur should easily secure the decision win.

Brodie Farber (13-3) (0-0) vs. Rory Markham (15-4) (0-0) - (8-2 in IFL)
Conqueror: Markham by TKO in 2. Despite the 13 wins, Farber lacks experience. The tested and proven Markham will simply be too much, too fast. Rory is known for his dramatic hands and ability to finish the fight at any time while never giving up. He’s an odd addition to the UFC roster, but a great fighter who should pick up his first UFC victory in style.
PsyD: Markham by unanimous decision, mostly because of his striking power. Farber is going to have to respect Farber early, and this will set the tone for the rest of the fight.

James Giboo (11-2) (0-0) vs. Brad Blackburn (14-9-1) (0-0) - (4-2 in IFL)
Conqueror: Blackburn by TKO in 1. Brad Balckburn has some impressive wins in the IFL. With TKO’s over Jay Heiron and Delson Heleno, the veteran fighter is on his way up and James Giboo is in his way. Giboo is the perfect opponent for Blackburn for one reason, he’ll stand and bang. This shouldn’t last long and the IFL veteran should pick up the TKO quickly.
PsyD: Blackburn by TKO in 2. Giboo will have his hands full - too full - with Blackburn. Nasty knockout coming in round 2, courtesy of Blackburn.

Nate Loughran (8-0) (0-0) vs. Johnny Rees (10-0) (0-0)
Conqueror: Loughtan by flying legdrop in 8. If I knew anything about either of these fighters I’d give you a guess. So I’ll take Loughton because he doesn’t have a picture on his Sherdog profile. You know how I always love an underdog.
PsyD: Rees by TKO in 3. Well, it’s time for the right brain logic here. Rees will dominate because his initials spell J.R. Sounds good.

Dale Hartt (5-0) (0-0) vs. Shannon Gugerty (10-2) (0-0)
Conqueror: Gugerty by TKO in 3. The problem with putting together a fight card in a month and a half is obvious. That’s where this fight comes in. Gugerty is a member of Brandon Vera’s team and has a bit more experience, so why not?
PsyD: Hartt by unanimous decision - it just sounds right.

After all the hype and promotion, Affliction will finally make its MMA debut. This card should be legendary. While you can never predict how a card will work out, the check books of Donald Trump mixed with MMA’s hottest clothing company have insured that this card will be intriguing at worst. The only drawbacks will be the typical new promotion glitches that always happen when a new organization hits the airwaves, and the fact that all of these fights will be in a ring.

As far as the picks go, I’ll be flying solo on this P&P. Not to worry, a little brotherly battle will ensue over the UFC Fight Night pick and preview that will be posted tomorrow morning.

-Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly

Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) vs. Tim Sylvia (26-5)
Emelianenko by submission in 2. Finally we get a chance to see what Fedor can do. It’s about time. His bout with Sylvia is a dream come true for fight fans as former heavyweight champions collide. It should be nice. It should also be Fedor’s day for two reasons: the fight is in a ring and he’s Fedor. Sylvia could shock the world and pick up the victory, but that means he’d have to knockout or last five rounds with Fedor. Not going to happen.

Matt Lindland (20-5) vs. Fabio Negoa (8-3)
Lindland by TKO in 2. Pay close attention, this is how ground-and-pound is done. Fabio Negoa is good, he’s just not that good. Every time he’s been asked to step up in competition, he hasn’t. That’s not good for someone stepping in with “The Law.”

Josh Barnett (25-5) vs. Pedro Rizzo (16-7)
Barnett by submission in 2. Let’s face it, Rizzo is washed up. I know he’s coming off of a victory over Jeff Monson, but “The Snowman” had a striking complex and virtually threw the fight. Barnett won’t do that. His ability to get the takedown and finish the fight should means curtains for the heavy-handed Rizzo.

Andrei Arlovski (12-5) vs. Ben Rothwell (33-5)
Arlovski by unanimous. I’m not sold on Andrei Arlovski. He’s looked good as of late, but he hasn’t looked like “The Pitbull” of old. We could see the “fight not to lose” Arlovski with him eeking out a victory over Rothwell. Big Ben has a lot of talent, but he’s never beaten anyone the caliber of Andrei for a reason.

Renato Sobral (29-7) vs. Mike Whitehead (23-6)
Whitehead by unanimous. Since losing on the Ultimate Fighter finale, Mike Whitehead has been on an epic run by winning twelve fights in a row. Even better, 11 of his 12 victories haven’t made it to the judges score cards. His opponent, Babalu is simply trying to stay relevant in an ever-changing MMA climate. Riding a two-fight win streak, Sobral is always dangerous. He may not be the best in MMA, but if his opponent is any less than perfect, Babalu will strike and submit in a moments notice. Still, overwhelming is the key and it puts the advantage in Whitehead’s corner.

Mark Hominik (15-8) vs. Savant Young (9-7)
Hominek by unanimous. The little engine that couldn’t will do just that when he steps in the ring with Mark Hominek. Savant Young is energetic, exciting and most of all, mediocre. Not to say that his opponent is perfect. Mark Hominik has always had issues with his strategy. Outside of the spotlight, Hominik looks for the kill, but under the lights he tends to bore the living crap out of anyone within eye shot. It seems as if Mr.Hominek becomes afraid to lose, and tries to simply out-point his opponent. Someone should tell Mark that this isn’t a basketball game. Still, he’s simply a better fighter than Young.

UPDATE: Gary Goodridge (23-17-1) vs. Paul Buentello (25-10)
Buentello by TKO in 2. Enter Gary Goodridge. The cancellation of Aleksander is disappointing, but Affliction rebounded well. A Goodridge-Buentello clash is nearly as entertaining. These two should slug it out with Buentello landing more damaging blows. I see Buentello taking this one home in 2.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (13-3) vs. Edwin Dewees (35-12)
Nogueira by TKO in 2. I’m not going to lie, I know next to nothing about the younger Nogueira. What I do know is this: there is no way in hell that he’s going to lose to Edwin Dewees. Nogueira has beaten the likes of Dan Henderson, so Dewees shouldn’t be much of a roadblock.

Terry Martin (16-4) vs. Vitor Belfort (16-8)
Belfort by TKO in 2. Terry Martin is a slugger, Vitor Belfort is a striker. The difference will become apparent when the new and improved Belfort uses his dynamic hands to put away Martin in dominating fashion. No, I don’t think Belfort’s back, I simply believe he’s here and better than Martin. Look for fireworks as these two know how to throw leather.

JJ Ambrose (9-1) vs. Mike Pyle (16-5-1)
Pyle by unanimous. There’s one thing about JJ Ambrose’s stellar career that bothers me, he’s yet to face anyone of Pyle’s caliber. Now, I know that Mike Pyle isn’t Georges St.Pierre and that’s exactly my point. Ambrose has a lot of potential and would really benefit by defeating the tough veteran, but it looks to be Pyle’s day. I see a lot of Ambrose on his back and with Pyle picking up the win.

Ray Lizama (5-5) vs. Justin Levens (9-8)
Levens by TKO in 2. I think Affliction management asked, ” How do we make Justin Levens look good?” Unfortunately the response was, ” I know, we’ll put him up against the first guy we see in Home Depot.” Enter Ray Lizama. Then again, Levens has lost eight of his last 10 fights. Take a second and think about that. Maybe the Home Depot strategy is going to work against Levens. I’ll stick to my pick, but with a little less confidence.

UFC 86 is going to be something else. What that something is, I’m not entirely sure. The card is strong, but it’s either going to be one of the most entertaining of the year, or a borefest that makes me wonder about by investment. Ah, but isn’t that the nature of the sweet sport of MMA?

I’ve been beating Jason “FightStalker” Taylor so bad in picks that he went out and got my very own brother to compete. It won’t work, The Conqueror will prevail!

UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

CH Quinton Jackson (28-6) (3-0) vs. #1 Forrest Griffin (15-4) (6-2)
Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly: Jackson by TKO in 3. Forrest is one tough dude, but that’s not going to help him against Rampage. Jackson’s been nothing short of dominate and it’s going to take more than Griffin to take him out.
Chris “PsyD” Beverly: Jackson by unaimous. A lot of UFC fans are ITCHING for an upset here, but it’s not in the cards. Forrest has evolved into a very durable, high skilled mixed martial artist, and will make this fight “interesting” while being overwhelmed - but not finished - by the stronger, more experienced Jackson.

Patrick Cote (12-4) (3-4) vs. Ricardo Almeida (9-2) (2-2)
Conqueror: Almeida by submission in 1. Lately, Patrick Cote has shown the killer instinct that once made him a legitimate prospect. Outside of the UFC, not only has Cote never lost, he’s never been pushed to the limit. As great as that is, Almeida is going to kill him. Cote’s stand up game may have improved, but his ground game still stinks. That’s not a good weakness to have when facing a third degree black belt in Brazilian jujitsu (under Renzo Gracie). While there’s a chance that Almeida is a shadow of the man he used to be, it’s not likely that Cote the man for the job.
PsyD: Almeida by submission in 2. Cote has better striking skills than Almeida, while Almeida’s exceptional ground skills are well documented. What looks like an even match on paper degenerates into a mismatch in the Octagon when you consider that Almeida has a submission victory over Nate Marquardt. Almeida’s ground skills > Cote’s striking skills = Almeida Victory.

#3 Joe Stevenson (28-8) (5-2) vs. Gleison Tibau (14-5) (3-2)
Conqueror: Stevenson by unanimous. How soon we forget about Joe Daddy? After being demolished by B.J. Penn, reading or hearing anything about Stevenson in last six months has been more legend than reality. Still, Stevenson is a very tough fighter and deadly when focused. He should have some trouble with Tibau, but will ultimately be the victor for one reason: he’s better. Tibau’s a tough fighter with solid wrestling and jujitsu and while he should survive the Stevenson experience, he won’t benefit from it.
PsyD: Stevenson by submission in 3. This fight will allow Stevenson to fully recover from his loss to B.J. Penn. Stevenson is the more well rounded fighter. This is an intriguing match up that doesn’t end well for Tibau.

#4 Josh Koscheck (10-2) (7-2) vs. Chris Lytle (25-15-5) (4-7)
Conqueror: Koscheck by unanimous. Kos has more in common with a wet blanket than most people give him credit for. His opponent has been shockingly mediocre in his career and has been absolutely dreadful in the UFC. Credit where credit is due, Lytle has been aggressive and impressive in his four times out, but he’s has trouble throwing strikes when he’s trying to defend the takedown. Looks like a long 15 minutes for Lytle and the fans.
PsyD: Koscheck by unanimous. Because he is so difficult to finish, Chris Lytle has a way of losing AND making his opponent look bad. As a fighter with well developed wrestling skills that occasionally poses as a striker, Koscheck’s potential is limited, but he will handle Lytle for 3 rounds.

#7 Tyson Griffin (11-1) (4-1) vs. Marcus Aurelio (16-5) (2-1)
Conqueror: Griffin by unanimous. This fight is proof that the UFC lightweight division is stacked. As a pure wrestler, Tyson Griffin has had trouble when his main form of attack is stifled. His opponent, Marcus Aurelio won’t stifle it. As a pure grappler, Aurelio will look to take advantage of a lazy takedown and submit the young stud. I don’t think he’ll be able to. This fight could go either way. Let me put this fight into perspective, Tyson Griffin is the lone blemish on Urijah Faber’s record and Marcus Aurelio owns a submission victory of Takanori Gomi.
PsyD: Aurelio by unanimous. Tyson Griffin is very good, but something tells me he will not rise to the upper-tier of the UFC’s lightweight division where Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn reside. This isn’t Tyson’s fault - it’s a reflection of the depth of the division. Aurelio’s style matches up well against Griffin’s, and he should be able to secure a close decision victory.

Gabriel Gonzaga (8-3) (3-2) vs. Justin McCully (8-3-2) (1-0)
Conqueror: Gonzaga by TKO in 1. Will the real Gabriel Gonzaga please stand up? It isn’t really clear just how good Gonzaga is. His dismantling of Cro Cop was impressive, but it’s looking more and more like Cro Cop was already in pieces. After being stopped by Fabricio Werdum, it’s unclear if Napoa is simply a flash in the pan or a man on a slight detour. His opponent is something different all together. Justin McCully is a wrestler, while he has submitted more than a few of his opponents in the past, his game looks only slightly more exciting than a spelling bee. If he takes home the victory, Napoa is done.
PsyD: Gonzaga by unanimous. Gonzaga is a monster, but he keeps the monster hidden inside most of the time. McCully is a tough fighter, and could be a threat to Napoa’s often-lumbering style. Expect Gonzaga to go for the win rather than the thrash, with the outcome being a unanimous decision victory for “Napoa”.

Jorge Gurgel (12-3) (3-2) vs. Cole Miller (13-3) (2-1)
Conqueror: Miller by unanimous. If Jorge Gurgel is involved, the fight will go the distance. As a grappler with a striking complex, he will attempt to stand toe-to-toe with the much larger Cole Miller. I don’t know why he does it, but this blac belt in Brazilain Jujitsu always makes it his priority to throw hands. Miller is more of a wrestler, but his hands are good enough to pull off the victory. Hell, he may even finish Gurgel.
PsyD: Miller by unanimous. Jorge - please don’t strike in this fight. We all know that my pleas are useless, and Miller will outpoint Gurgel over 3 rounds.

Melvin Guillard (20-7-2) (3-3) vs. Denis Siver (11-5) (1-2)
Conqueror: Guillard by TKO in 2. Love him or hate him, the guy’s interesting. That’s exactly why he’s facing Denis Siver. Fighting out of Germany, Siver’s an interesting guy as well. A self-proclaimed striker, the majority of victories - and defeats- have come by submission. Siver’s one problem is that, while he’s very well rounded, he’s simply not that good. Look for this to be one-sided, but you never know when Melvin is involved.
PsyD: Melvin by unanimous. Guillard is back! But is he good? Not really. But he IS entertaining, and he’ll win by unanimous decision.

Corey Hill (2-0) (1-0) vs. Justin Buchholz (7-2) (0-1)
Conqueror: Hill by TKO in 2. Flip a coin. That’s the best way to predict who will win this fight. Hill’s got the skills, but he’s only beaten 7-11 clerks in the past. The same goes for Buchholz, so it’s anyone’s guess.
Stalker: Hill by unanimous. Because I was wondering where Corey Hill went! Last time I saw him, he was on the Ultimate Fighter Reality show, and while he was very raw, he had potential. Who knows, but I hope he wins.

It is seems impossible to think of anyone challenging Anderson Silva for the middleweight title. Nearly every middleweight contender this side of Matt Lindland has tried, and failed to unseat the Spider.

After defeating Dan Henderson, it wasn’t clear if Anderson Silva truly had a challenger. Nearly every true middleweight contender had been unsuccessful in defeating the champ.

Yet, things are changing. While fighters such as Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson still stand in the way of title glory, a new wave of fighters is coming.

It all starts with Martin Kampmann. The Dutch striker was well on his way to a title shot when injuries forced him out of his number one contender match with Rich Franklin. Now, with a devastating comeback victory over crafty veteran Jorge Santiago under his belt, the well-rounded European is back on track and eyeing Anderson’s belt.

That is, of course, if Ricardo Almeida doesn’t beat him to the finish line. As a third degree black belt in Brazilian Jujitsu under Renzo Gracie, he may have the best chance of taking out the Spider.

Once retired, Almeida returned to the UFC with one goal: Silva’s belt. Still, it’s hard to judge just how good Almeida will be in his second run in the UFC. He has yet to fight anyone worth mentioning*, and six years off is a very long time.

Still, the ever-budding middleweight division has more young guns. Prospect Rousimar Palhares made a huge splash in his UFC debut by submitting ground wizard Ivan Salivarry with one of the sickest armbars (a transition from rear naked choke) in the history of MMA.

While largely unproven, Palhares has been unstoppable in his short MMA career and brings a world-class submission game to the Octagon.

In the same mold, Damian Maia has been the model for jujitsu practitioners in his young career. Finishing all but one of the fighters he’s faced, the perfect Maia looked nothing short of dominant against Ed Herman and deserves recognition.

Clouding the UFC talent pool even further is the next class from The Ultimate Fighter. Winner Amir Sadollah, C.B. Dollaway and Jesse Taylor all have unlimited potential in a organization that wants to make them a star.

Clearly, the middleweight division is changing. While the current class of fighters has made the division stagnant; the up-and-coming stars will be making things interesting in the near future.

Will any of these fighters be challenging Anderson Silva in the near future? Doubtful. Instead, these fighters will change the face of the division. Fighters like Nate Marquardt, Rich Franklin and Yushin Okami may be at the top, but their names and faces lack the same level of interest without fresh opponents.

New blood means new match ups and more intrigue. Fight fans may not always love how the UFC shows A.D.D. towards certain weight classes (next up, the welterweights), but when they put the time and effort into one, the fans reek the benefits for years to come.

PEACE
Brett “The Conqueror” Bevery
* Ricardo Almeida will be facing off against Patrick Cote this weekend.

Evan Tanner (32-7) (11-5) vs. Kendall Grove (8-5) (3-2)
I’m still wondering why Evan Tanner’s return fight was against Yushin Okami? Two years of not fighting should never be greeted by a top three middleweight (in the UFC). Still, the Tanner saga continues against Kendall Grove. Assuming it’s not 2001, losses to Patrick Cote and Jorge Rivera should put Grove’s back firmly against the wall. The fight is make or break for both fighters.
My Prediction: Evan Tanner by TKO in 2. All hail the holy beard! I might be wishing this prediction more than rationalizing it, but how can I pick against a face like that?

Amir Sadollah (0-0) (0-0) vs. CB Dollaway (6-0) (0-0)
The Ultimate Fighter finale is sure to be one for the ages. What age exactly? Not sure. Pitting an fighter who doesn’t have a professional win against a up-and-coming prospect should end the way the first one should have; 15 minutes of dominance. Still Amir is one tough SOB is willing to take a shot to deliver one, so he’s defiantly got a good chance. The dude simply doesn’t quit. More importantly, he’s got the mullet Karma, middleweights BEWARE!
My Prediction: Dollaway by unanimous. He’s a ringer! Look at the competition on the show. The only guy who had a chance was too much of douche for Dana White. Amir got lucky in their first fight, a second submission is not in his future.

#6 Diego Sanchez (18-2) (7-2) vs. Luigi Fioravanti (11-3) (3-3)
Why is this fight taking place? Diego is a top ten welterweight, Fiorvanti isn’t even close. The guarding of the “Nightmare” franchise is in full effect. Diego needs a challenge, someone of Josh Burkman or Akihiro Gono’s ilk, instead he will get Fiorvanti. While talented, Fioravanti “stand up only” skill set gives him a punchers chance. That is, assuming he can stay on his feet.
My Prediction: Sanchez by TKO is 1. What’s more, he ask for a title shot after his win. He’s that kind of guy. Fiorvanti’s skill of throwing hands will buy him a ticket to the mat and a TKO to boot.

#8 Spencer Fisher (20-4) (5-3) vs. Jeremy Stephens (10-2) (2-1)
The lightweight division goes through Spencer Fisher. Don’t think Stephens doesn’t know that. While Fisher isn’t the top dog in the division, he’s got the skills and the drive to beat anyone, anytime. His opponent is a bit more one dimensional. Stephens hands are incredible. If he can keep his distance and let his hands go, he can topple the King in jus a few minutes
My Prediction: Fisher by TKO in 2. When will pure strikers realize they NEED a ground game? This one should end ground-and-pound style as Fisher is too much for the young Stephens.

Matt Riddle (0-0) (0-0) vs. Dante Rivera (10-2) (0-0)
Yet another fighter making his professional debut. Theses two locked horns on the show, but I forgot to care. Riddle is a raw and tough fighter while Rivera’s got a well-rounded and experienced game.
My Prediction: Rivera by unanimous. Riddle is a talented kid, he just need more time and more experience.

UNDERCARDS: Keepin’ it brief

Josh Burkman (9-3) (5-3) vs. Dustin Hazelett (10-4) (3-2)
My Prediction: Burkman by unanimous. Josh is good enough on the ground to keep from getting submitted and that’s exactly what he’s going to do. Be sure and grab some chips or move the laundry to the dryer during this one.

Marvin Eastman (14-7) (1-3) vs. Drew McFedries (6-2) (2-2)
My Prediction: McFedries by TKO. Eastman’s got a glass jaw and hasn’t shown the same tenacity in his takedown attempts. This one should play into the hands on the Militech fighter.

Matt Brown (6-6) (0-0) vs. Matt Arroyo (3-1) (1-0)
My Prediction: Arroyo by submission in 2. The way Forrest and company talked about Matt Brown, you’d think he was a star in the making. Instead, he simply a tough guy. Tough guys don’t know how to avoid an arm bar.

Jeremy Horn (79-17-5) (5-5) vs. Dean Lister (10-5) (3-1)
My Prediction: Lister by unanimous. Horn has no stand up and I can’t see anyway he could beat Lister on the ground. Looks like a long night for Gumby.

Tim Credeur (9-2) (0-0) vs. Cale Yarbrough (0-0) (0-0
My Prediction: Creur by TKO in 2. The third appearance of debut professional shouldn’t be a good one. Yarbrough has a notoriously bad ground game that should end in a Credeur ground-and-pound victory.

Rob Yundt (6-1) (0-1) vs. Rob Kimmons (20-3) (0-0)
My Prediction: Kimmons by submission in one. It seems as if Alaska just doesn’t have the finest that MMA can offer. Yundt is the Alaskan Fighting champion, but is overmatched by a very versatile Kimmons.

If money talks, an array of new MMA organizations just won’t shut up.

New MMA organizations are following the mold set my Elite XC and DREAM by making their MMA debuts with multi-million dollar budgets. If it sounds to good to be true, it is.

There’s a popular lending agency that has the tagline, “When banks compete, you win.” Never has that phrase meant so much in MMA than the last 365 days. The influx of a number organization with big banks accounts has meant that the best fighters in the world have been making the money they deserve.

Organizations such as Affliction and Adrenaline have entered the market with checkbooks a blazin’, gulping up any free agent fighter they can get their routing numbers on. As a result, the best of the best are getting paid.

Even mid-level fighters have seen a dramatic increase in pay and interest from rookie organizations looking for name recognition to help draw fans. As a result, pay is up; free agency is down. In a sport where a fighter’s career is often less than five years, that’s a good thing.

Of course, all good things have to end.

Mixed martial artists have been notoriously underpaid. Now, with the influx of a number of fight organizations, the pay rate is climbing at an alarming rate. The question is: when do the underpaid become the overpaid?

Never forget the World Fighting Association. For those who have conveniently forgotten, the WFA was an organization that was once set to make an impact. Highlighted by two MMA’s biggest free agents, Quinton Jackson and Matt Lindland, the organization was set to make MMA history and watch the fans pile in. Then reality set in.

By paying its fighters such an exuberant rate, the organization couldn’t pay their debts fast enough. In the end, it took only one fight card for the organization to go under, and later sell its contracts (including Rampage) to the UFC.

Another organization that meet a similar fate was BoDog. Remember the Fedor - Lindland fight in Russia? Some of the biggest fighters in the world signed the dotted line for the once flamboyant organization, only be be left with fights on their contract and an empty bank account.

MMA is an extremely healthy market, but organizations can over extend themselves faster than ever before. Recent news of the IFL demise, as well as the end of the line for Bodog has shown the industry as profitable, but dangerous.

Can a new organization break through the clutter with only a checkbook in hand? Affliction is going to try. Spending more money on talent than any debuting organization this in the history of MMA, Affliction MMA aims to gain fans by sheer wow factor alone.

What today’s MMA mrket lacks is stability. New organizations have been springing up all around the world; old ones have been falling just as fast. Still, the ones that surviva have somehting more than money, the have a brand.

Organizations like Elite XC and the UFC don’t just spend money, the sell their respective brands. When the do spend big money, the objective isn’t get the biggest name, but to gain someone that can better the organization.

Still, the new will not be denied. Afflicition, Adrenaline and others will make their debut, and a large percentage will fall. The question is how much this will improve the long term landscape of MMA, or simpy cloud the current picture?

PEACE

Those who complain that this UFC PPV doesn’t have a title fight should look a little closer. Each fight on the main card has possible consequences that could reshape the respective divisions. Speaking of reshaping the division, that’s exactly what I’ve done of the last two fight cards. While this once was a two horse race, Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly is the man to see when in comes to UFC picks.

#4 Matt Hughes (41-6) (15-4) vs. #5 Thiago Alves (14-3) (7-2)
Conqueror: Hughes by unanimous. How soon we forget that Matt Hughes is still one of the top five welterweights in the game today. If you don’t believe me, ask Thiago Alves on Sunday. While the American Top Team welterweight has looked impressive of late, his only win against a top ten opponent occurred in his last time out. Is he over the hump? Or was his last fight a fluke? I think my prediction speaks for itself.
Stalker: Hughes TKO in 3. This one is tough to call. Hughes has been on the decline as of late for one reason and one reason only, he was an old school one dimensional fighter. Hughes dominated the competition by using ground and pound, which he is awesome at. The problem is, the new breed of fighters like GSP and Anderson Silva, are great at everything. Fortunately for Hughes, Alves has not yet risen to the level of a new breed fighter. Alves is great at stand up, and if he can keep this fight standing up, he has a shot at pulling off the decision. Do not count Hughes out though, he is a true champion, who knows how to get the job done. Look for Hughes to pin Alves down and ground and pound his way to a stoppage.

#1 Nate Marquardt (26-7-2) (5-1) vs. Thales Leites (11-1) (3-1)
Conqueror: Marquardt by TKO in 2. With Anderson Silva atop the division, it’s easy to forget that Nate Marquardt is one of the top middleweights in the world. He may not be flashy, but he wins. This fight should be no exception. Leites is riding a three fight win steak against the worst that the UFC has to offer. Yes, Leites is a good fighter and has excellent jujitsu, but it’s the ground-and-pound of Marquardt that will make the difference.
Stalker: Marquardt by split decision. This is a battle of two solid ground fighters. I have to give the ground advantage to Marquardt due to his ground and pound ability, the guy is a beast. I like Leites for his submission skills, but it is going to be hard for Leites to pull off the submission with Marquardt’s fists slamming down on his face.

#3 Fabricio Werdum (10-3-1) (1-1) vs. #2 Brandon Vera (8-1) (4-1)
Conqueror: Vera by TKO in 2. Brandon Vera is not as good as he thinks he is, but he’s better than Fabricio Werdum. After a short stall, Vera has the opportunity to be one spot behind Frank Mir for heavyweight gold. Werdum’s abilities seem to be based on his opponents inability, and a focused Vera should put the Brazilian in a bad place early.
Stalker: Vera by unanimous decision. Although Werdum has the advantage on the ground, I have to give the advantage of the fight to Vera. Very is a good wrestler, which should save him from submissions, and he is a better striker than Werdum.

#6 Michael Bisping (15-1) (5-1) vs. Jason Day (17-5) (1-0)
Conqueror: Day by submission in 2.The Jason Day era is upon us. After reintroducing the rubber guard to the MMA world, Day is poised to play spoiler to the Bisping parade. It’s a spot that Day’s been in before. His victories over Alan Belcher and David Loiseau have come from the underdog position, and I boldly predict this fight will go the same way. Still, the chink in Day’s armor comes from the Hail Mary. Three of Day’s losses have come as a result of a heavy-handed shot, either ending in a daze or by suddenly dropping to the ground. So in short, this could be the fight of the night.
Stalker: Bisping by TKO in 2. Don’t get me wrong, I want Day to win this fight, I just don’t think it is going to happen. Although I don’t think Bisping is as good as his record is, I think he will overpower Day and eventually drop him to the canvass.

#9 Marcus Davis (13-3) (5-1) vs. #8 Mike Swick (11-2) (6-1)
Conqueror: Davis by unanimous. Swick can run, but he can’t hide. The last time Swick looked dominate, Joe Riggs was standing across from him in the octagon. One lose and three unanimous decision victories later, and Swick looks like a guy trying to not to lose, rather than looking for the kill. On the other hand, Marcus Davis has looked like a man possessed. Finishing five of six UFC fights since his return, Davis has come in ready to fight, and ready to finish. Unfortunately for the fans, Mike Swick won’t let that happen. He will dance. By staying away from Davis’ killer hands, Swick will hope to etch out a victory and get closer to welterweight gold. Not the best strategy against a boxer. No, we won’t see a dramatic knockout, but Davis should be able to handle the once promising Swick to get his hand raised.
Stalker: Swick by TKO in 2. We are going to see a better Swick than the one that showed up for his welterweight debut. Both of these guys have good a good stand up game, but I think the advantage goes to Swick, because of his speed. Swick has something to prove here, he needs to show that his “quick” wins early in his UFC career were not just flukes.

#9 Martin Kampmann (15-2) (3-0) vs. Jorge Rivera (15-6) (4-4)
Conqueror: Kampmann by TKO in 2. The return of Kampmann has been met with little-to-no fanfare. The dutch striker looks to fix that. Remember, he was the first choice to fight Rich Franklin, not Yushin Okami, one year ago. Standing in his way is an opponent who is notorious for not going down without a fight. Jorge Rivera is a tough vet who’s willing to stand with Kampmann. While I believe that strategy will cost Rivera the fight, he may give the rusty middleweight some issues for a round or two.
Stalker:Kampmann by submission in 1. This should be an interesting match up. Kampann has been off for over a year due to a knee injury, while Rivera is coming off of a surprise victory over Kendall Grove. Both of these fighter need this win to stay active in the UFC. Although Kampann has a slight technical advantage in the stand up, Rivera is the stronger striker. Look for Kampmann to take the fight to the ground and pull off a quick submission.

Kevin Burns (5-1) (0-0) vs. Roan Carneiro (12-6) (2-1)
Conqueror: Caneiro by submission in 1. Don’t get to know Kevin Burns because he won’t be around too long. Carneiro has looked impressive in all of his UFC fights, even in losing. It’s hard to imagine anyone but the Brazialian getting his hand raised at the end of this fight.
Stalker: Caneiro by submission in 2. If this one stays standing up, Burns has a punchers chance. The more likely scenario is the fight going to the ground, where Caneiro will submit less experienced Burns.

Thiago Tavares (14-1) (3-1) vs. Matt Wiman (9-3) (3-1)
Conqueror: Tavares by submission in 1. Thiago Tavares is better than this. While Matt Wiman is a fitting opponent, Tavares has be unable to fully open up his game over the last two fights and Matt Wiman will pay for this. While the Ultimate Fighter pretty boy has looked impressive during his three fight win streak, he is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tavares will be the only victorious Thiago Saturday night.
Stalker: Taraves by submission in 2. The submission is inevitable, whenit will happen is the only mystery in this fight. Wiman might be able to hang on long enough to make this one a fight, but don’t count on it going the distance.

Jess Liaudin (12-9) (2-1) vs. Paul Taylor (8-3-1) (1-2)
Conqueror: Liaudin by submission in 2. This is a clear case of veteran vs. newbie. If the fight stays on th feet, Taylor should be victorious. But the ground in where the fight will end, a place where Paul Taylor is far from comfortable. Look for “The Joker” to pull this one out with a submission.
Stalker: Liaudin by submission in 1. Both of these fighters are coming off of losses, so they need to perform to keep their UFC dreams alive. The striking advantage goes to Taylor, but the ground game belongs to Liaudin. Look for this one to hit the ground early, followed by a quick submission by the more expirenced Liaudin.

#8 Eddie Sanchez (8-1) (3-1) vs. Antoni Hardonk (6-4) (2-2)
Conqueror: Sanchez by TKO in 2.Don’t look know, but it’s a match up of the “could-of-beens.” Hardonk was supposed to be a deadly striker that was going to take the UFC by storm, and Eddie Sanchez was considered the future of the heavyweight division. Now they both just want to keep their contracts and will take it out on each other. The difference is talent, Sanchez has a lot of it, Hardonk wants more of it.
Stalker: Sanchez by TKO in 1. Hardonk is going to try and keep this fight on the feet, but Sanchez is going to want this fight on the ground where he can pound out Hardonk. If Hardonk can keep it on the feet, this one could go the distance, however, scenario is highly unlikely.

Jason Lambert (23-7) (4-2) vs. Luiz Arthur Cane (7-1) (0-1)
Conqueror: Cane by TKO in 1. The difference in this fight could come down to crunches. Jason Lambert is one talented fighter, he just has a little bit of an oreo habit that sometimes interrupts his training. If he’s in shape, he’s a stud; if not, Cane will simply have to run between his legs and pull the tights. Seriously though, this has the making for a hell of a fight, but Can’s ability on the ground should be the difference maker.
Stalker: Cane by TKO in 2. Cane is going to keep this fight standing up, much to the dismay of Lambert. Lambert wishes he could take this one to the ground where he could have somewhat of a chance. Not likely though, Cane is going to keep this on the feet and put some serious hurting on Lambert.

Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly

Overall: (52-30)

VS: (4-2-2)

Last Card: UFC 84 (8-3)

Few meet the purchase of the WEC by Zuffa with eager anticipation. After all, the organization was to simply become a feeder organization for the much larger and powerful UFC. Not so fast.

Since the purchase, the WEC has done nothing but put on top notch shows with some of the best mixed-martial artists in the game. Fueled by the emergence of the featherweight and bantamweight divisions, the organization has become one of the powerhouses of MMA. The proof is in the fight card, and Sunday night is no different.

The Main Event

Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver will take on current WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber in a classic striker vs. grappler battle. Both fighters will be looking to show a strong overall game in order to avoid their opponent’s strengths. In short, Pulver will use his wrestling to keep the fight standing; Faber will use his striking to put the fight on the ground.

Fighting off chokes and dodging jabs, WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber has garnered national attention for his all out style and his coolness under pressure. Even with a black belt in Jujitsu on his back, the California Kid has retained his WEC gold. Is Pulver his kryptonite?

For Jens Pulver, a win means a brand new chapter to his career; a loss just might signal the end. After looking dominant in his first fight under the WEC banner, the veteran will look to continue his rejuvenated ways. The task may be impossible, as he’ll have to avoid the relentless takedowns of Faber in order to impose the will of his dangerous left hand.

The Title Fight No One Knows About: Bantamweight

Ask the average MMA fan who Miguel Torres is, and expect to get a perplexed look in return. What they don’t know, will still entertain them.

At 33-1, Torres is doing his part to gain the notoriety he deserves. Know simply as “the guy with the mullet,” the current champion earned his gold in dominant fashion. In 3:59 he tapped out then-champion Chase Beebe to become the most unknown WEC champion in the organization. After Sunday night, that just might change.

Standing in Torres’s way is Yoshiro Maeda. Far from a slouch, the Pancrase, DEEP and Pride veteran will make his second appearance in the WEC cage. In what looks to be another classic fight between striker and grappler, Maeda has a tall mountain to climb in the 135-pound Torres.

Worth a Watch

The WEC is going to bring more to a cable television show than most organizations bring to a PPV. Fighters like Rob McCoulough, Chase Beebe and Jeff Curran all line the power packed undercard. Even better than that is the asking price: nothing.

For those who have yet to check out the awesomeness of the WEC, now is your time for redemption. This card has everything a fight fan needs: drama, suspence and good competition. The only thing it’s missing, is you.

PEACE

ILL WILL is more than a ridiculous name, it’s irritating grammar. All my English courses aside, UFC 84 looks awesome. Every fight on the main card brings some sort of intrigue and has made me more giddy than Jenna Jameson at the plastic surgeons office. Let’s face it, all this “fighting” stuff is simply a sideshow, everyone knows what the real show is: the domination of the FightStalker. Pick. Game. Set.

Champion: BJ Penn (12-5) (8-3) vs. #1 Sean Sherk (32-2-1) (6-2)
Conqueror: Penn by TKO in 3. Sean Sherk is pissed and no one cares. While it isn’t hard to imagine Sherk laying on BJ Penn for 25 minutes, an in-shape Penn won’t let that happen and should destroy the schmuck-like Sherk. Still, Sherk is nowhere close to a push over. The only men to get the better of Sherk have worn welterweight gold at some point in their career; just like BJ Penn.
Stalker: Penn by Submission. I have to agree, an in-shape Penn will absolutely destroy Sherk, or anyone else for that matter. Although a pissed off animal like Sherk can take most, if not all lightweights out there, in the word of BJ Penn himself, “Sean Sherk, you’re dead!”

#5 Wanderlei Silva (31-8-1) (1-3) vs. #3 Keith Jardine (13-2-1) (5-1)

Conqueror: Jardine by unanimous. Wanderlei Silva was one hell of a fighter. Keith Jardine is one hell of a fighter. Silva hasn’t shown much over his last four efforts and this should be no different. The Dean of Mean should pick apart Pride’s former golden boy and inch himself closer to UFC gold.
Stalker: Silva by TKO. Jardine is a bad ass no doubt, but I think Silva is going to connect with some bombs and knees that will bring the very capable Jardine to the convass. Conqueror is right, Silva has not been imporessive as of late, but I think there is still something left for the former Pride star, and Jardine is going to be on the recieving end of it.

Wilson Gouveia (10-4) (4-1) vs. Goran Reljic (7-0) (0-0)
Conqueror: Gouvei by TKO in 2. I don’t usually put much stock in Gouveia, but Reljic hasn’t beaten anyone that should have been in the ring in the first place. Shocker aside, Gouveia should be too much for the green Reljic.
Stalker: Gouvei by TKO in 1. This one is going to be rather quick. Gouvei has the wrestling skills to to avoid Reljic’s formidable ground game. And Gouvei has the power to pummel Reljic into last week.

#8 Tito Ortiz (15-5-1) vs. #4 Lyota Machida (12-0) (4-0)
Conqueror: Machida by TKO in 2. The future of the light heavyweight division goes through Lyota Machida. While Tito is always dangerous, especially with his back against the wall, his inability to take a punch will be his downfall. Machida shouldn’t have much trouble dodging Ortiz’s takedown attempts and thus, will eventually catch the former champion.
Stalker: Ortiz by unanimous decision. business. I see Ortiz taking I disagree with the Conqueror’s assessment on the takedown Machida down and showing the crowd some classic Ortiz ground and pound. I think an in-shape, uninjured Ortiz is a royal bad ass, and we are going to see him punish Machida to show the UFC (Dana White) what they will be missing when Ortiz leaves.

Thiago Silva (12-0) (3-0) vs. Antonio Mendes (14-2) (0-0)
Conqueror: Silva by submission in 1. The only thing about this fight I know is that Thiago Silva is a badass. Antonio Mendes is a very talented fighter who hasn’t tasted defeat in four years, but I can barely pronounce his opponents, let alone know anything about them. Mendes appears to be a hell of a fighter, but Silva is the real deal.
Stalker:Silva by submission. This is an easy one, Thiago Silva is a rising star in the UFC, and I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon. I see an significant win for him tonight. Look for a title fight in Silva’s very near future.

Ivan Salaverry (12-5) (3-3) vs. Rousimar Palhares (7-1) (0-0)
Conqueror: Salaverry by decision. Once again, it’s hard to get a feel for someone you’ve never even heard of. Rousimar Palhares seems to be a good fighter, but Ivan Salavarry is far from a question. The fight should come down to the ground game, a place it’s hard to see Salivarry losing.
Stalker:Salaverry by submission. I used to like watching Salaverry fight, he is a well-rounded fighter, with solid ground skills. Palhares is in a bad position here, Salaverry is no doubt fighting for his continued presence in the UFC, and I see Palhares as a mere speed bump for Salaverry to re-jump start his career.

#9 Rameau Sokoudjou (4-2) (0-1) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-7) (0-1)
Conqueror: Sokoudjou by TKO in 1. Kazuhiro Nakamura is a tough guy, but he’s going to need more than that. Rameau Sokoudjou shouldn’t have any trouble hitting the bullseye planted securely to Nakamura head. This is just the fight that Sokoudjou needs to get back in the mix at 205lbs, and Nakamura is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Stalker: Sokoudjou by KO in 1. Although I do not believe that Sokudjou has the skills to make it to the top level of the UFC, there is no denying his brute power and knockout ability. The guy s a beast. Nakamura has some sweet judo skills, but I don’t see them having any effect on the beast.

Rich Clementi (31-12-1) (4-3) vs. Terry Etim (9-1) (1-1)
Conqueror: Clementi by unanimous. The resurgence of “No Love” has been amazing. Clementi looked more done than Tiki Ghosn after his loss to Shonie Carter on “The Comeback,” but another chance is just what the veteran needed. This fight may not be the most exciting on the card, but it should be a display of dominant groundwork with the veteran coming out on top
Stalker: Clementi by submission. I see a lot of submissions tonight, and Etim will definitely be on the receiving end of one from Clementi. Although Etim is no punk, I don’t see anyone from the lower to mid ranks of the UFC ranks stopping Clementi anytime soon.

Jon Koppenhaver (5-1) (1-0) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (9-2) (0-0)
Conqueror: Yoshida by TKO in 2. If there’s one thing I’m not impressed with, it’s the War Machine. Koppenhaver deserves credit for his battle with Jared Rollins, but he has yet cash in the on his full ability. Then we have Yoshida; the Cage Force veteran has been making quick work of anyone who steps in his way and should be too much for the inexperienced Koppenhaver.
Stalker: Yoshida by TKO in 1. Koppenhaver is in trouble here. Yoshida is going to explode late in the first round and feed Koppenhaver some tasty elbows via ground and pound. I do think that Koppenhaver has some potential, but he lacks experience, and this fight is a bad match up for him. This is not the kind of experience the young fighter needs.

Jason Tan (4-2) (0-1) vs. Dong Hyun Kim (9-1-1) (0-0)
Conqueror: Kim by TKO in 2. The only thing you need to know is that Kim has heavy hands and Tan has a glass jaw. The results should be fun to watch.
Stalker: Kim by TKO in 2. Conqueror is dead on, there is not much to say for this one, it is an easy call. Tan needs some work if he is going to compete with the big boys. With a 4-2 record, it seems as if Tan is being feed to the lions here, sorry buddy.

Christian Wellisch (8-3) (2-1) vs. Shane Carwin (8-0) (0-0)
Conqueror: Carwin by TKO in 2. Hype or no hype, Shane Carwin is a beast. Christian Wellisch is a well-rounded fighter, but shouldn’t be much of an obstacle for the man being touted as the future of the heavyweight division.
Stalker: Wellisch by decision. Call me crazy, but I am not convinced of the hype just yet. It just seems that the bodybuilder types always get the hype until they make it to the middle ranks of the UFC where they are put in their place.

Brett “The Conqueror” Beverly
Overall: (44-27)
VS: (3-2-2)
Overall: (40-31)
VS: (2-3-2)
Last Card: UFC 83: (7-4)
